Glad you asked. Actually no, not really. It would be nice if just once - for a change - somebody would get the story of my movie. My bad, I know.
Here we go:
In August 1961 Francis, Mary and little Alexander are a happy family, living in the Eastern part of Berlin. Maria and Alexander spend a day and a night in West Berlin to visit her mother. Next morning the borders are closed for people from the East and they started to build the famous Berlin wall, isolating West Berlin from the surrounding communist state GDR.
Maria manages to get a West Berlin ID for Franz, but just when she's ready to smuggle it into the GDR, the borders are closed for people from the West, too. Shortly afterwards she receives a letter telling her that Franz was shot while trying to escape.
She'll never love another man.
Maria gets a job, starts an affair with her colleague Elfi. They have one of the lamest sex scenes in the history of the movies. Maria decides that Alexander definitely needs a father and she herself is going to be that father. She leaves for a very special hospital in the Lebanon, trusting her good friend Elfi to take good care of Alexander. It doesn't go as planned and she gets lost for nine years.
Franz didn't die, he just got caught, put into jail for some years, finally makes it to the West, where he gets on the dark side and has to change his name.
By a strange coincidence that only happens in some kind of movies, Alexander had to change his name, too. Elfi forces him to earn his daily bread working as the male prostitute (or is it "prosti-dude"?) "Sven".
Maria the Man returns, meets "Sven" in Elfi's apartment, who thinks she's a new client. She tells him that she's his mother / father. His short but hard working life has taught him to despise men. Showing his contempt he crushes the phallic symbol cigarette (silly, I know - but it looks good).

Flashback to happier days. Franz and Maria. Maria is shouting "I love you!" all the time, Franz ago but can not hear, because the music is too loud. It's lyrics are: Daddy loves only Mommy, Mommy loves Daddy ... only
Rainer Werner Fassbinder died just when TIW was about to be finished. This movie is the first and probably the only 16mm film dedicated to him.
