"The inner wall" as NDW-and movie-parody
The New German Cinema (New German Cinema) had acquired around 1980 by success at international film festivals in the United States a surprising familiarity. Rainer Werner Fassbinder was interested in film there entirely familiar. He was regarded as a relevant artist, whose works - or at least its name - was important to know.

An "intense" love scene in bed between the two women.
Spokesman: They fight bitterly against it, to be the plaything of big powers.
Alexander watching, imitating them happy.

Maria Alexander sits on the unmade bed, stroked him.

11th Outside. On a lawn in front of a factory. Day. Maria. Elfi.
Maria Elfi and sit side by side on the grass.
Maria: You

The camera pulls back. We see a lonely place, an empty street.

Maria comes up as a man plunged the stairs. She is excited.
Speaker: Nine years Maria wrong place by the deadly chaos of the Middle East, and he comes back unbroken.
She stops in front of a door on which a large ELFI stands.
15th Inside. A stylized living room. Maria. Alexander ("Sven").
Alexander ("Sven"): So for 80 marks I'll do you better than me, eh

Mary sits frozen in the chair.
(softly) I'm his father.
(louder) I am your father.
(louder) I'm your mother. Alexander, my son!
Alexander stands up. His face expressed contempt and disgust. With angular movements he pointedly suppressed from his cigarette.
Insert: The bent cigarette.
16th Inside. A stylized living room. Maria. Alexander ("Sven"). Elfi. Franz (Peter).
Elfi comes through the door. Behind it is French
Elfi: Hi Sven, look who is back: Peter! Since we do

Maria turns slowly toward the door.
Maria (stunned, shocked): Franz!
Maria (then melting): Franz!
Franz, laughing, how can one be so stupid! Tztztz!
Alexander: You are my father? Is so funny! I have two fathers!

Maria screams hysterically.

What's going on in" The Inner Wall "?
Glad you asked. Actually no, not really. It would be nice if just once - for a change - somebody would get the story of my movie. My bad, I know.
Here we go:
In August 1961 Francis, Mary and little Alexander are a happy family, living in the Eastern part of Berlin. Maria and Alexander spend a day and a night in West Berlin to visit her mother. Next morning the borders are closed for people from the East and they started to build the famous Berlin wall, isolating West Berlin from the surrounding communist state GDR.
Maria manages to get a West Berlin ID for Franz, but just when she's ready to smuggle it into the GDR, the borders are closed for people from the West, too. Shortly afterwards she receives a letter telling her that Franz was shot while trying to escape.
She'll never love another man.
Maria gets a job, starts an affair with her colleague Elfi. They have one of the lamest sex scenes in the history of the movies. Maria decides that Alexander definitely needs a father and she herself is going to be that father. She leaves for a very special hospital in the Lebanon, trusting her good friend Elfi to take good care of Alexander. It doesn't go as planned and she gets lost for nine years.
Franz didn't die, he just got caught, put into jail for some years, finally makes it to the West, where he gets on the dark side and has to change his name.
By a strange coincidence that only happens in some kind of movies, Alexander had to change his name, too. Elfi forces him to earn his daily bread working as the male prostitute (or is it "prosti-dude"?) "Sven".
Maria the Man returns, meets "Sven" in Elfi's apartment, who thinks she's a new client. She tells him that she's his mother / father. His short but hard working life has taught him to despise men. Showing his contempt he crushes the phallic symbol cigarette (silly, I know - but it looks good).

Rainer Werner Fassbinder died just when TIW was about to be finished. This movie is the first and probably the only 16mm film dedicated to him.

was first performed "The inner wall" on 29/06/1982 1A in the main auditorium of the "rust bucket" at the Free University of Berlin.
was created in autumn 1982, it was a fantastic performance at the closing ceremony of the film seminar, under which "the inner wall. The room was for the attending crowd too small. "The inner wall," filled it with laughter and happiness, thus demonstrating that their lengths are bridged best with laughter.
selected Consequently, the audience it ultimately the best film. The picture shows the head of the film seminar, Professor Dr. Werner Dewitz (right), me the price, the "snake movie" presented. This little sculpture was so valuable that it was stolen.

promoted the film heavily and performed at every opportunity. There was a performance in Moviemento, as was Tom Tykwer projectionist there. "The inner wall" presented by Tom Tykwer - that does not sound bad.
Has this film changed his life? Who would deny this seriously! But the idea is just too ridiculous.
During a Fassbinder film festivals in an off-ran "The inner wall" as a permanent supporting film. It was actually asked then, when running for the announcement in this trailer film would last. As a creator I love my child, for all its weaknesses. But is 12 times more to do it, that's really hardcore. Many thanks to you unknown Fassbinder viewers! It was a strangely touching compliment!

Theoretically, owning a knife like this could get you killed in the West Berlin of 1982. Thus was the post war law of the allied forces (USA, USSR, England, France) who until 1990 had the last say in Berlin. They didn't use this particular paragraph, because they didn't have to and it would have been somewhat unpopular, but it's always quite handy to have some laws up your sleeve everybody else has forgotten about.

Mein in der Kastrationsszene verwendetes Messer sieht zwar brutal und gefährlich aus, aber das liegt nur an seiner Darstellungskunst. Leider ist dies sein einziger Film geblieben. Sein großartiges Potential wurde nie wirklich genutzt.

The Inner Wall - Basic Background Stuff
During the early 80ies my university offered a crash course in film-making, telling the future scientists how to document their work on film. The students were shown the basic usage of the instruments, formed small groups of four people, were given 10 minutes of Black-and-white reversal film and could use the instruments for very few days. "The Inner Wall" was filmed in one day, ending late at night with just me, my beloved knife and Maria in her kitchen. I made her a nice cup of cocoa (blood) and she took the knife and castrated herself.
The workshop was attended by a group of meteorology students who made a film about the canteen (I could have predicted THAT), a guy with a sweet little car, a "Gogomobil", who made a film about it (dito), and a guy with the inane idea to cram the story of a feature film into a trailer for that film, me.
The very first day I turned up with a treatment for TIW. It wasn't greeted with too much enthusiasm. Looking back I can't blame them. It seems like an impossible task.
But when all the film were shown at a special screening, TIW was voted best film of the bunch by the viewers, thus winning the totally well-known and prestigious "Film Snake"-award. Actually it was the best TIW-screening I've ever attended. So much laughter and joy in a room full of people - it really did seem to be a good movie. The famous magic of the cinema at work.

It was my intention to show the intimacy of the Maria/Elfi-relationship by just letting them hug & cuddle a little bit, more or less fully dressed. I needed images to go with the off-screen claim "They struggle fiercely ..."
This is mirrored in the scene with little Alexander hugging himself, imitating exactly that.
Turned out that one of them really fancied the other one, so she came up with the suggestion: We'll do it in the nude, but there can't be a man in the room during the filming. In a creepy way this actually made sense at that time. I thought it would be a good idea to let the women exploit themselves. But they didn't and it wasn't.
The only woman in my technical team was - in a biblical sense - totally blind. She didn't know the first things about the cinematographic religion. And I hadn't be too successful in explaining to her what TIW was supposed to be all about.
I ended up with neither having images supporting the "They struggle fiercely"-punchline, nor a sex scene that deserves that name. Just a blatant nothing that I still had to use. This is the only thing TIW-related, including all it's other weak points, I'm not responsible for. Praised be the Good Lord of the Cinema for that!
